Wine Press Northwest rates Wilridge Nebbiolo, “Outstanding!”

There’s a constant and delicious theme of cherry, red currant, rhubarb, cocoa and white pepper, supported by appropriate — and age worthy — tannins.

Estate Nebbiolo
Rating: Outstanding!

There’s considerable history behind Paul Beveridge’s label, and since he opened in 1988, his is Seattle’s oldest continously operated winery. Nearly two decades later, he began Wilridge Vineyard, an 85-acre site planted to 12 acres with 22 varieties represented.

Five of those are Italian grapes, including this remarkable example of Nebbiolo, the noble and late-ripening variety native to Piedmont. There’s a constant and delicious theme of cherry, red currant, rhubarb, cocoa and white pepper, supported by appropriate — and age worthy — tannins.

There are few examples of Nebbiolo produced in the Northwest, and this is meant to cellar for several more years, then decant thoughtfully. It earned a gold medal at the 2014 Capital Food and Wine Festival at St. Martin’s University.
